Emirates’ focus on meeting and exceeding customer expectations both in the air and on the ground were recognised yesterday with four accolades at the ‎Business Traveller Middle East 2017 Awards.

At a ceremony attended by key travel industry executives, Emirates was crowned “Best Airline Worldwide”. It was also named “Airline with the Best First Class”, “Airline with the Best First Class Lounge” and “Best Frequent Flyer Programme”.

Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, said: “Our customers are at the heart of our brand. In every step of the customer’s journey, we thoroughly and regularly examine the product to achieve a high level of customer care. Providing a truly memorable experience is about continually innovating across our product and offering a personal touch and a warm welcome. Moreover, our Skywards accolade solidifies the programme’s standing as an industry-leading loyalty programme that offers Emirates customers value through exceptional privileges and benefits. We are honoured to be recognised for our efforts by Business Traveller Middle East’s readers.

I would like thank our team and attribute this award to our dedicated staff who are the pillars behind every achievement and award we receive.”

Emirates invests continually in product developments and service enhancements. In the past year, the airline’s on-board enhancements include: newly designed Business Class seats, re-designed amenity kits for First and Business Class passengers, environmentally sustainable blankets and interactive augmented reality amenity kits for Economy Class passengers, and regular updates of its range of onboard toys for young flyers. The airline also continues to lead on the in-flight entertainment front with a broad choice of over 2,600 channels on its ice system.

On the ground, Emirates completed a US$ 11 million makeover of its Business Class Lounge at Concourse B in Dubai International Airport, and expanded its global network of dedicated lounges with the opening of its newest Emirates Lounge in Cape Town International Airport.

Emirates Skywards, the airline’s loyalty programme, last year launched Cash+Miles, enabling members to redeem flights using a combination of cash and Skywards Miles, regardless of their membership tier. This popular initiative instantly reduces the cost of tickets and can be used on any Emirates flight across all classes, making any seat available to Emirates Skywards members. Emirates also introduced “pay-per-visit” lounge access, enabling Emirates Skywards members and their guests travelling on Emirates to enjoy the airline’s First and Business Class lounges at Dubai International Airport and abroad.

For corporate customers, Emirates launched a revamped Emirates Business Rewards programme to provide greater value, including easier Miles redemptions and upgrades even on last minute bookings.

Today, Emirates Skywards has 14 airline partners including strategic partnerships with Easyjet and Qantas, offering member access to one of the world’s largest networks of global travel destinations. The programme also has 24 hotel partner brands covering nearly 20,000 properties worldwide.

Earlier this month, Emirates was recognised as the ‘Best Airline in the World’ at the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for airlines. The award was based on thousands of reviews Emirates received from the TripAdvisor community over the past twelve months. Emirates was the most positively reviewed airline in the industry over that period of time.

Procter & Gamble Marks 12 years of Sharing Clean Drinking Water.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) is committed to leveraging a tiny packet in a big way for the one billion people who still live without clean drinking water. Today, P&G announced that its non-profit initiative, the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW), has provided its 12 billion litre of clean drinking water as part of P&G’s commitment to help address the global water crisis.

This key milestone was celebrated in Kampala, where CSDW was also marking its 12th year of providing clean drinking water to needy communities around Uganda. Since its inception in 2004, CSDW has worked with a global network of more than 150 advocacy and implementation partners by providing clean drinking water during emergencies and in sustained community programs.

Procter & Gamble’s CSDW Program’s Director, Ms Allison Tummon Kamphuis said CSDW Program was initiated to address the global crisis of lack of access to clean drinking water using a simple technology that is the P&G Purifier of Water.

The beneficaries demostrate the P&G water purifying during the the P&G celebration of giving away 12 billion litres of water.

“We’ve seen the tremendous impact these packets can have when they are made available to people who need them,” said Ms Tummon. “The ability for people to make their own clean drinking water helps families avoid waterborne diseases, keeps children healthy so they can stay in school and helps entire communities.”

“Through a powder technology that kills deadly viruses and bacteria, removes dirt, parasites and other pollutants, contaminated water is made clean and drinkable for thousands of families across the country. Since 2004, P&G Purifier of Water Packets have been shared in more than 85 countries and the program has grown thanks to a worldwide network of NGO and government partners,” she added.

The P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Programme in Uganda is one of the larger P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water initiatives worldwide.  Working with PSI’s local affiliate PACE Uganda, ChildFund, Alive Medical Services, Save the Children, MSH, FXB, Action Against Hunger and others, P&G has helped purify more than 400 million litres of dirty water since 2005. P&G works with both local and international partners to provide clean water to families in rural areas, people affected by cholera outbreaks and floods as well as to people living with HIV-AIDS.

P&G’s commitment to Uganda continues and specifically, this year, the company will invest more than 1.6 billion UG shillings to provide nearly 60 million liters of clean drinking water to more than 75,000 people in Uganda.

In Uganda, 35% of people do not have access to safe drinking water. This not only affects their health, but also their education and economic opportunities – thus perpetuating a seemingly inescapable cycle of poverty.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Water and Environmental Sector, Engineer Disan K Ssozi commended Procter and Gamble for their continuous efforts to improve the lives of thousands of Ugandans.

“The impact of the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Programme cannot be over-emphasized because lack of access to clean water has detrimental effects on families and communities. Providing a way for these communities to access to safe water helps them lead healthier, productive lives which in turn lead to better socio-economic standing.”

“The Ministry of Water and Environment has registered great success in improving access to safe water across the nation. And with partners such as Procter and Gamble coming in to supplement these efforts, I firmly believe that we will soon be able to fulfil our vision of providing clean and accessible water to every Ugandan,” he concluded.

East African Development Bank and KFW sign agreement to finance agriculture in Kenya.

The East African Development Bank (EADB) has today announced that it has entered into a financing agreement with KfW, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, for the ‘Agricultural Financing Kenya’ project which is funded by the German Government as part of the wider ‘One World – No Hunger’ special initiative.

The announcement was made at the East African Development Bank Head Offices in Kampala, Uganda. Vivienne Yeda; Director General of EADB made the announcement.

EADB and KfW’s ‘Agricultural Financing Kenya’ will cater to the SMEs and farmers along the agricultural value chain in Kenya. The project which will be funded by EUR 13 million consists of two components.

The first component will provide medium- to long-term loans to small and medium sized farmers and SMEs along the agricultural value chain. This will be done via selected partner financial institutions that boast extensive market knowledge; while the second component will be technical assistance and will involve training and capacity building measures.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Yeda noted that agriculture is the key source of income among Kenya’s rural population.

“Most of the farmers from rural Kenya are employed in Small and Medium sizes enterprises (SMEs). This program will go a long way to improve food security for the communities while achieving the greater purpose of poverty eradication,” she said.

“It is our belief that the program will give agricultural SMEs in Kenya the opportunity to invest and therefore expand and grow. This will greatly improve agricultural productivity and efficiency in Kenya.  Ultimately, a more efficient Kenyan agricultural sector should boost economic growth, generate employment creation, reduce poverty and increase food security,” Ms. Yeda concluded.

The ‘Agricultural Financing Kenya’ program follows the successful implementation of two similar collaborations between EADB and KfW in Uganda: the ‘Rural Finance Enhancement Program’ and the ‘Agricultural Enhancement Program’.  The two programs follow a similar model and have delivered over EUR20 million in financing to SMEs in Ugandan rural areas and along Uganda’s agricultural value chain.

Emirates introduces tablet loan service to US-bound First and Business Class customers.

– Emirates has introduced another service to mitigate the inconvenience of the recent ban on electronic devices on board US-bound flights. Beginning today, First and Business Class passengers will be able to borrow tablets on board Emirates’ US-bound flights allowing them to continue working during their flight.

The new service is in response to the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) directive which requires all passengers travelling on non-stop flights to the US from Dubai to check-in their laptops, tablets, and other personal electronic devices larger than a smart phone.

As part of this latest service, Emirates premium customers will have a Microsoft Surface tablets equipped with Microsoft Office 2016 available for loan on board. Customers can download their work on to a USB which can be brought on board and plugged into the devices to continue working seamlessly.

The service is complimentary and will be available on all non-stop flights from Dubai to Emirates’ US destinations.

For customers who prefer to stow away their personal devices and simply enjoy the award winning inflight entertainment and service on board, Emirates had introduced a laptop and tablet handling service for US-bound customers. This complimentary service has been made available to passengers in all cabin classes since 25 March 2017, which was when the new TSA rules took effect.

This service allows customers to retain and utilise their personal devices until just before they board their US-bound flights. Passengers must then declare and hand over their laptops, tablets, and other banned electronic devices to security staff at the boarding gate, who will pack and tag each device to be stored in the aircraft hold and returned to the customer at their US destination.

To date, nearly 8,000 passengers have utilised Emirates’ laptop and tablet handling service on the airline’s 112 weekly non-stop flights departing Dubai International airport to cities in the USA. Emirates has received positive feedback from appreciative customers, and reports an even mix of Economy, Business and First class passengers utilising its laptop and tablet handling service.

These two new services by Emirates gives customers travelling to the US several options, such as: packing their electronic devices into their check-in baggage at their point of departure; the opportunity to use their laptops and tablet on their first leg of their journeys and during transit in Dubai, up to the moment they board their US-bound flight; and for premium customers the choice to continue working on loaned devices on board. Customers can stay connected in the air with mobile phone connectivity, in-seat telephones with SMS and email and live TV on most flights. Currently, over 85% of Emirates’ fleet of passenger aircraft is equipped with Wi-Fi on board.

The TSA directive does not apply to Emirates’ US-bound flights via Milan (EK205) and Athens (EK209). It also does not impact flights departing from the US, or Emirates’ flights to any other destination.

Emirates serves 12 US airports with passenger flights – Newark (EWR), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Orlando (MCO), Chicago (ORD), Boston (BOS), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Seattle (SEA), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Washington (IAD) and New York (JFK).
