Jjajja Florence is the latest beneficiary of Airtel’s Together We Can project.

Airtel Uganda, The Smartphone Network, has today fulfilled a promise to build and handover a house to Jjajja Florence, an elderly lady from Kira who has been taking care of homeless children since the early 1980’s.

Jjajja Flora, whose story was featured on the premiering episode of Airtel’s ‘Together We Can’ TV Series, takes care of seventeen children who were dumped at her doorstep at a tender age by unknown women who shied away from their motherly responsibilities. Over the years, she has faced many difficulties, lack of accommodation and adequate living space for the children at her Kireka-based home being the major one.

Airtel Uganda, through their 52-part TV show that aims at exploring a range of issues currently being faced by all Ugandans, including poverty, health, education and selfless service, visited Jjajja Flora, listened to her story and promised her a new house in addition to solutions to difficulties such as school fees, food and medical bills.

Speaking at the handover of the new house, Airtel Uganda Managing Director Mr. Tom Gutjahr said, “At Airtel, we are passionate about making a positive impact on the individuals and families in the communities in which we operate,” adding that the story of Jjajja Flora is not in isolation; there are many Ugandans doing so much to positively change the lives of other people and Airtel Uganda is out to find them and grant them one wish that will change their lives and enable them to continue helping others.

‘Together We Can’ is a 52-part TV show that will explore a range of issues currently being faced by all Ugandans, including poverty, health, education and selfless service. Each story that will be showcased on the series will end with the ultimate celebration of these Ugandan heroes when Airtel awards them with prizes that enable them to fulfill their dreams of helping others.

‘Together We Can’ airs on NTV, NBS and Bukedde TV.

Catch up with the Busaabala singer, Maurice Kirya.

Maurice Kirya has stolen the hearts of many ladies across Africa. His first appearance on Coke Studio Africa this season coincided with the release of his third album: Mwooyo. We caught up with the Busaabala singer for a quick Q&A:

Maurice Kirya 2
Why are you still single?
Well, I don’t think I will be single for too long. I am feeling lucky this year. If I keep coming to Kenya I might get lucky.

Did you expect to be paired with a female artist?
To be honest I didn’t expect anything and I preferred not to. The mash up concept of the show made me open minded. I was trying to figure out how to make it work. I hope they would pick Busaabala but it wasn’t picked.

How has it been working with Fid Q?
Fid Q is so much fun and such a ball of energy on stage. I loved how my soul music was fused with his Hip-Hop. We’d been planning to work together for ages and when we finally met it was a match made in heaven. We have spoken about working post Coke Studio Africa it’s just that both our schedules are tight but we’ll make it work.

Maurice and Fid Q perform one of their mashups

What was your best mash up so far?
That’s a hard one. I kinda liked all of them. I liked Bongo Hip-Hop because I used to do that kind of style in music and my fans were able to see another side of me. The Bendera ya Chuma/Blue Dress mash up was also great.
IN case you missed to watch Fid Q Coke Studio Africa CYPHER, watch it now.

How can you describe producer Nahreel?
Apart from him being a genius in making beats I call him a fashion killer. Every time he walked in during rehearsals or the studio, he was looking too good and nobody could have stolen his swag.

What’s your best Coke Studio Africa moment?

Working with NE-YO. He is somebody that is professional and legendary. He’s achieved so much and it was great to be close to him.

Airtel Uganda Signs Partnership Agreement with Finance Trust Bank.

Uganda’s Smartphone network, Airtel Uganda has today partnered with Finance Trust Bank to improve its customers’ experience by leveraging on technology to enhance the movement of money between their Airtel money wallets and their deposit accounts at Finance Trust Bank.

The Finance Trust Bank’s mobile banking platform dubbed ‘SimuYo BankYo’ was introduced to give the bank’s customers access to a variety of services including: balance inquiries, movement of money from one account to another, airtime purchase, bills payment as well as movement of money – Mobile Wallet to Bank and Bank to Mobile Wallet also known as Push & Pull.

Airtel Money Director Mr. Paul Langlois (second from right), Mrs. Annet Nakawunde Mulindwa, the Managing Director - Finance Trust Bank (centre) and other partners launch the ‘SimuYo BankYo’ mobile banking platform

According to Mrs. Annet Nakawunde Mulindwa, the Managing Director – Finance Trust Bank, “The bank is growing its delivery channels to give its customers more options and methods of accessing their deposits. Our customers can now deposit money on their savings account at their convenience without necessarily coming to the banking hall and we hope that this convenience will help customers save on time spent en route to the bank or in queues inside the bank.”

Mobile money services are widely used by low and medium income people who may not have access to formal banking services and the partnership with Airtel Uganda will see the bank’s growing number of customers have access to banking services on their mobile phones.

“This partnership will help both our customers and non-customers engage with the bank more often since most neighborhoods in rural and urban areas have more than one mobile money access point. This will enhance financial inclusion in addition to growing the banks revenue and deposit base due to banking transactions done Anytime, Anywhere through customers’ mobile phones,” Mrs. Mulindwa added.

Speaking after signing the agreement, the Managing Director Airtel Uganda Mr. Tom Gutjahr applauded Finance Trust Bank for their willingness to enhance the lives of the customers by ensuring real time access to their funds through connection with their mobile money wallets.

Mr. Godfrey Mutabazi, the Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission and Chief Guest applauded Finance Trust Bank for joining the list of banks that have invested in increased consumer empowerment as well as rural communication development.
